09H00 (Anfit. 2.01) - Workshop on Project Development,

A project can be defined as a set of activities. Each activity needs a certain amount of time (that can be variable or even stochastic) and requires different type and quantity of resources (tools, personnel, money, etc.).

Also, usually there are additional constraints that affect the scheduling of the activities, as precedence constraints (for example, an activity cannot start until another one has finished), time constraints (do not start or finish before or later than a certain date) and simultaneously constraints (activities that cannot be done at the same time).

After an introduction, in this session different tools for project scheduling will be introduced: graph representation of time and precedence constraints; Gantt chart and load curves; and heuristic, metaheuristics and exact algorithms for project scheduling considering different evaluation criteria.

11H00 - Robust Optimization, SC Cases

Two Optimization sessions are aiming at theoretical subjects and practical issues, either from an introductory or advanced approach. These sessions are conjugating Optimization basics with the implementation of useful tools and SC models.

The Advanced session is directed to Stochastic Programming and Robust Optimization, and scheduling and planning applications are treated.

Some working cases are described, namely, introducing the costing appreciation in SC and the construction of purchase rules.

João Miranda is Adjunct Professor (Nomination) at College of Technology and Management (Portalegre Polytechnics Institute, Portugal) and researcher in Optimization methods and Process Systems Engineering at the Centre for Chemical Processes (associated onto IST/UTL). He is teaching for 12 years in the Mathematics group (mainly: Calculus, Operations Research, Numerical Analysis) and he is author of several papers in Optimization and Engineering Education subjects. He is also interested to strength the referred subjects through proposals of international cooperation in Erasmus and Fulbright contexts.
